a few days earlier, Dream High2 finally waved goodbye to Korean TV..... and yes, I've been following it ever since episode 1 was aired last Jan. 30,2012. And I also finished watching Dream High1 last summer.so if I were to compare them..... Here’s what I have in mind. Take time to red it....! (it’s quite long)
Story Line
Dream High1: A story of a Classical trainee (Hye Mi ) who was left with a mission to pay her father's debts and was forced to enroll to Kirin High and learn POP. The series showed how stubborn hearts can be melted through friendship and love; how happiness can be gained through self-sacrifice; how Pride can destroy relationships, and how greed can transform good to evil.
Dream High2: A story of a girl (Hye Sung ) with a dream of becoming a singer yet realized in the end that her real talent is in composing. The series also highlighted the difficult lives that Idols (k-pop stars) undergo in their lives as trainees and performers. How their lives are far from what the fans would normally see when they perform n stage. How money can manipulate things; how knowing your dream and holding on to it is very important; and how stars are also as normal as their fans.
My Pick: I go for Dream High1 since I feel that the values it presents are very important. It highlighted realizing the true meaning of self-sacrifice and acknowledging it for the sake of others and not just for oneself. though this was also shown in DH2, I think it made more impact in DH1 since it showed how it is learn and acknowledged by a stubborn girl in the character of Hye Mi. and also I liked how they presented shifts in characters like the character of Baek Hee (Best friend) who ones was a friend, then became the evil one, then finally became the best friend ones again.
Main Character
Hye Mi (Dream High1): A Stubborn girl who only thought of herself. She grew up in a wealthy life with her father and sister but suddenly bombarded with the challenge of paying her father’s debts. Hye Mi is not the normal heroine that we usually see on dramas. In the beginning of the series, she was more like the villain who would go breaking her enemy's side mirror and would drop her friends along the sides anytime she wants. She thinks highly of herself and she would never admit that she was wrong. However throughout the story she meets friends (who soon became her lovers) and experiences that thought her about caring for her comrades and making sacrifices for the sake of others. Hye Mi, who was trained to be a classical singer and thinks poorly of pop music, also appreciates how pop could also be a part of people's daily lives.
Hye Sung (Dream High2): a Girl with a dream of becoming a singer even though her skills obviously tell her not to. Hye sung, grew up with her father (pastor) and little sister, and is just like your typical leading lady. She’s the clumsy awkward girl who has friends by her side always looking out for her. A big fan who soon had her idol (JB) as her man. She’s a kind hearted girl who knows when to say sorry or not; a girl who is ready to sacrifice and take in all the blame for the sake of her loved ones. Hye Sung had a dream of becoming a singer and held on tight to it, however in the end she realized that she is better off being a composer and later became a famous Broadway director. The story also showed the love for mothers and how they would always be a mother no matter what.
My Pick: I go for Hye Mi (DH1) since even though she started as a girl with an awful attitude, in the end she finally learned how to love and be loved by others. I like the parts where she learns and realizes that concern of oneself in not the only thing in the world. Also DH1 made impact to me since as I have mentioned, Hye Mi is not the typical Lead Character that we see, who’s being bullied and laughed upon. Instead she's the Lead Character who's been bullying and laughing about the people around her. Yes I think it's amazing and I "Clap CLap Clap to the writer of the Series (JYP?)...
BEST FRIEND
Beak Hee (Dream High1): Beak Hee in the beginning was like the ignorant friend who just follows Hye Mi around and never knows that Hye Mi doesn't even care about her. She always have her hair like Hye Mi, her clothes like Hye Mi and even followed Hye Mi around and carried her things. She was tagged as "Hye Mi's Follower" because of these circumstances. Yet in the middle, she learned how to stand up for herself and follow her own dream. However her ways of fulfilling them were quite different from what has to be really done. She grew out to be the evil one who stuck pins on her opponent's shoes just to win an audition and even do desperate moves just to continue on being a star. however in the end, because of some realizations, she reunited with hye Mi and became the real Best Friend and not the follower.
Dong soon(Dream High2): the weird best friend who was there for Hye Sung the Whole time. She was the Friend who cheered for Hye Sung and even thought her weird (fake) rituals in order for her to capture her dream. The not so very talented girl (also) who's been happy for the success of her friends. She’s the crazy girl who gave everyone a good laugh throughout the series.
My Pick: Dong soon. I may not have much to say about her but she's the real Best Friend that we are looking for in here. The one who Cheers for her friends and comforts them; the one who looks for ways to have her friend's dream come to reality, even though they are just make-believes.
Antagonist:
Baek Hee(Dream High1): i have mentioned Baek Hee before as the best friend, however, she is also the villain in the story. The moment she got admitted to Kirin High, she was so blinded of her dream that greed came swallowing her. Her main concern is to fulfill her dream and get revenge from Hye Mi for dropping her off during their audition. She was determined not only to catch her dream but to get Hye Mi as low as possible. Her method for destruction; insulting Hye Mi and framing her up. She was so engrossed to get rid of Hye Mi that she even came to the point of attempting to hurt her.
Rian (DH2): Rian, the Idol who was not really talented at all. She falls below the skills of her co-members (Nana & Aille-HerSHe) and was tagged as "the face" and a "B-rated actress". Rian is the Stubborn and spoiled girl who desperately holds on to her title as an idol. She thinks of herself as a princess and therefor people should treat her as one. She hated Hye sung for the main reason that she and JB(her ex-boyfriend) are falling in love. She’s wanted to get more attention from the public since she was the weak member of her group and was so desperate on it. Though she might be the bad person here, they also showed how Rian has been working hard to help her mother and improve her skills.
My Pick:.... well for this one, I don't have a pick since..... I really don't know. They’re both the antagonist, that's all. kekeke
LEADING MAN:
Sam Dong (DH1): Sam Dong is the country boy who has a great talent of picking up and making melodies in an instant. he fell in love with Hye Mi the first moment Hye Mi came to convince him to go to Kirin School to be a special Student. though Hye Mi just used "flirting" as a weapon to get him to Kirin School, he fell for it and never stopped looking out for Hye Mi ever since. He was so in for Hye Mi and even took a falling pot(Baek Hee's doing) just for her; and he even had problems in hearing because of it; the down to earth leading man who has always been thinking of Hye Mi even though he was hurt and down.
JB(DH2): JB, the Idol who found love at Kirin High. In the Beginning, JB was (also) the stubborn star who (also) though highly of himself. He was so confident and proud that he even asked for his group to disband and go on his own doing solo. He was in a past relationship with Rian but broke up with her since he was thinking only of his dream. However, during his stay at Kirin High, he met Hye Sung, who has been his fan, and unexpectedly fell for her in which faith awkwardly would bring them together. Because of that, he learned how to be happy for others and think not only of his successes but of other's success as well.
My Pick: JB. I go for JB since I'm partly biased and I love twists in stories. JB started out to be the idol who only thinks about himself. However as time passed by, he learned how to be happy for others despite of his own downfall. Also, his Love for Hye Sung never died despite of all the hardships he had undergone because of her.
Father-Child relationship:
Chairman-Jin Gook (DH1): Jin Gook was the trouble maker who kept his relationship with the Chairman (his father) a secret since his father does not want his recklessness be exposed to the media. He has hatred towards his father for always wanting to keep him and send him to a foreign country for his sake during the elections. During the series, this father and son had lots of arguments just to get Jin Gook away from Korea during campaign period. Though they might have many arguments, in the end they both reconciled and made sacrifices for each other (the father cancelling his campain).
President Lee- Lee Seul (DH2): President Lee, the president of OZ Entertainment, brought his tough daughter to Kirin school since she was kicked out from her previous school for accused bullying. though she may be in the same place as her father, both of them never revealed their relationship. Lee Seul had hatred towards her father for thinking that he never thought of and cared for her. However her father secretly acknowledges her daughter's accomplishments at Kirin high. In the end, the continuous conflict and argument of sending Seul to Australia was ended, Seul allowed to stay at Kirin school to follow her father's footsteps and became the manager of Super Idol(her friends' rookie group). And eventually the whole school knew that her father was the president.
My Pick: I go for the president and Lee Seul. Since firstly I really like Lee Seul's character here. She arrived at Kirin School as the tough girl whom you would be afraid of to come across. But in the end, she met friends who made her laugh at all times. She was acting hard at first when she and her father were discussing about sender her off to Australian to be with her mother, yet she would always answer her father with a question "do you really want to send me away?"; always beating around the bush holding on to her pride, when she could always say it straight that she wants to stay with her friends. Conflicts came to an end during the final performance for the Super Idol where they were to sing a song that should move a person. She sang a song for her father, where she said out all her hatred towards during her intro yet wished her father a healthy life in the end. I think this father and daughter tandem is way too cute. And I really admire it.
ENDING:
Dream high1: Dream high1 ended with Sam dong being "K" the world famous superstar, Jin Gook as a professional, Baek Hee worked as a teacher at Kirin High, Pil Suk a kindergarten teacher, Jason, I'm not sure about, still they both are together and Pil Suk gained weight again; and Hye Mi as a famous classical singer. The story ended up as a reunion to all of them when they all went and attended Hye Mi's Classical concert. And Hye Mi’s sister studied also at Kirin High.
Dream High2: the series ended up with Yu Jin as a Teacher at Kirin High teaching kids in a weird manner; Dong Soon as a fake oracle for Idols; Lee Seul and Ui Bong opened their own talent school where Lee Seul was the manager and Ui Bong was the dance teacher (and yes, they were really together), Nana and Hong Joo became a duo idol; Si Woo became an actor for Dramas; Ailee became a solo artist; JB who dropped his dream of dancing became a producer and Hye Sung became a famous composer and Director after finishing a course in the US. The series ended with a reunion musical performance which was directed and written by Hye Sung herself where all of them sang a remake of the popular theme of dream high "Love High"
My Pick: I go for Dream High2. Firstly because I really don't find the twists in the ending of dream high 1 very nice. Some of the characters ended up not as I was expecting (not that i wanted things to be predictable) but they should have at least have the characters end up as what they have been building since the beginning. They should Have Hye Mi end up being the pop star since she already realized the good thing about it and the story even started out for her being forced to learn pop in Kirin high. And they should have had Sam Dong be a famous composer since they found out his unique talent of making music during the progression of the series. Also what made me so disappointed about the story is how Hye Mi and Sam dong ended up together when it was Hye Mi and Jin Gook's love story which was been building up from the beginning; from their Childhood till they grew up, faith had them meet up to comfort each other. Yet they just ended up all of a sudden. tsktsktsk. Dream High 2 ended up nicely, with them having their lives not far from how their characters were built up from the beginning. also, I really like this ending (me being biased again) since all the couples I have been shipping ended up together; Yu Jin and Rian, although not really together but had their eyes at each other; JB and Hye Sung, also not really together but JB kept on waiting for her to come back from US; and of course my favorite(biased) Ui Bong and Lee Seul, I've been really a shipper ever since their couple was building up bit by bit and it made me very happy the moment they were coupled together in the end.
......... Dream High1 ended up a long time ago, but my feel for it remained very clear to me.... though if we sum up all my votes towards the main points I pointed here may give you 4-2 in favor of Dream High2, I might say that it's still the first Season that made great impact to me. I really don't know why, but dream High1 gave me a week more of hangover for I really can't get it out of my mind.
Dream High all in all is a good drama fit for pop lovers and dreamers like me,....
NOTE: Everything written here are all my opinions, please don't get "spirited away" because of it... ahhahaha
